My TOP FIVE campsites of Summer 2020 AND 70+ tried and tested campsites from the #vanfamtribe community

Houghton Mill.jpg

We have visited nine very different campsites over the last nine weeks. All in varying locations across the UK, all with varying facilities and different positive aspects. Five of the sites we would recommend and we will return to in due course.

Campsites in order of stay not preference:

1: Houghton Mill, Cambridgeshire

A very well run campsite in a beautiful location. Prefect site if you enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking or wild swimming. Lots of opportunities for walking the surrounding meadows or maybe a walk into the pretty village of Houghton. Great site for a quiet weekend away. Located next to the National Trust property of Houghton Mill. Read our full review here.

2: Castlerigg Hall, Keswick.

An immaculately kept and very well ran campsite with stunning views over Derwent Water. Great location for hiking - including Walla Crag, Latrigg and Catbells. This campsite has touring pitches, caravan holiday lets, camping and hex pods available too. It is a big site but due to the layout of the site, it didn’t feel busy at all. Small shop, laundry facilities and several amenity blocks. Read a full review here.

3: Buckden Camping, Yorkshire Dales.

Set amongst the rolling hills and surrounded by beauty, the site has basic facilities which are located away from the main campervam pitches but worth the trek to the toilet for the views. A beautiful stream with waterfalls is located directly behind the site. It is in an ideal position for walking and exploring the dales directly from the campsite. The owners provide you with ordnance survey maps and lots of really good suggestions for walking routes. Small shop nearby that sells basic essentials.

4: Fforest Fields, Mid Wales

Fabulous site set in the Welsh Hills and surrounded by beauty. This site has two lakes. One for fishing and the other (boating lake) is specifically for swimming, paddle boarding and kayaks. Dogs are also welcome to take a dip too. Great onsite cafe with home-made pizza evenings and local cider. It has all the facilities you could need and lots of space to play for families. This is the only site where we were free to choose our pitch on arrival. Check in is from 2pm. Read a full review of Fforest Fields Campsite here.

Small Batch Campsite, Shropshire
A small, quiet, family run site that has been run by the family since 1969. All guests are personally shown to their pitches by the owners. The site is in the heart of the Shropshire Hills and surrounded by beauty. Directly from site, you can walk Ashes Hallow which is a stunning valley in the Long Mynd and onto Carding Valley. The site has a stream running right alongside it and there is a pub serving delicious food only a short walk away.
