What is the Best way to Road Trip from England to Poland?
One of the best ways to road trip from England to Poland is to take the ferry or Eurotunnel to France, then drive through Germany before crossing the Polish border. Here's a simple route:
1. Cross the Channel. Ferry from Dover to Calais, or use the Eurotunnel.
2. Drive Through Northern France. Depending on your route, you might wish to avoid the French Toll Roads so could head toward Belgium, or drive through France into Germany.
3. Motorways in Germany are toll-free for cars and campervans and the roads are excellent. However depending on your route, you might need to purchase a German Emission Sticker if you intend to travel through some of Germany’s low emission zones.
4. Cross into Poland. The border crossing from Germany into Poland is straightforward, with no additional documentation needed for EU travellers.
This route gives you the opportunity to explore Germany along the way. Consider stopping at Berlin, Dresden, or even taking a detour through the Bavarian Alps. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland and drive through the Netherlands, offering a scenic route before continuing through Germany and into Poland. Both routes provide excellent opportunities to explore more of Europe along the way.

What do I need to know about driving in Poland before I visit?
Driving in Poland can be a smooth experience if you’re well-prepared. Here are a few key things you should know:
Poland’s road infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, but in rural areas, you might still encounter narrow or bumpy roads.
In urban areas, the speed limit is typically 50 km/h (31 mph), while on rural roads, it’s 90 km/h (56 mph). On motorways, the limit can be as high as 140 km/h (87 mph), but be sure to check local signage.
Poland uses tolls on certain motorways, which you can need to pay tolls at booths using cash, credit card, or a mobile app. It is recommended to carry both cash and card for flexibility when travelling through Poland. For more detailed information about Poland’s toll roads can be found here. Fortunately, unlike neighbouring countries such as Austria or Switzerland, Poland does not require a vignette (road tax, or low emission zone sticker).
In addition to your driver's license, you will need vehicle insurance (make sure your policy covers Poland) and a vehicle registration document. A GB sticker is no longer required if your vehicle has the new UK number plate with the Union flag. If you vehicle doesn’t, you’ll need to add a UK sticker.
How can I prepare my Motorhome or Campervan for a Road Trip to Poland?
Before setting off on your adventure, make sure you have all the necessary documents to travel through mainland Europe, ensuring your campervan or motorhome is in top condition.
Before embarking on a big road trip, it is worth giving your van a full service. Check the engine oil, coolant, brake fluid etc
Inspect your tyres for any signs of wear or damage and ensure they are properly inflated, including the spare tyre. Consider carrying a tyre repair kit or a portable air compressor.
Ensure your brakes are functioning correctly and are in excellent working condition especially if you intend driving on any mountain passes.
Poland's weather can be unpredictable, especially in autumn and winter. Pack for all seasons, with extra blankets and thermal layers and ensure your vehicle’s heating system is working properly.
If you are travelling to Poland from the UK, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave, plus it must not have an ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago.
A UK driving license is valid in all European Union countries, including Poland. If you're planning to drive outside the EU, consider obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Make sure your motorhome or campervan insurance covers you for driving in Poland. Also consider European breakdown coverage.
Carry your vehicle’s V5C logbook and proof of insurance. You can find more details about the documents you need here and be sure to check out Vanlife in Europe - Your Complete Guide.
Update your Google Maps, or use a European SAT NAV. The roads in rural Poland can sometimes be poorly signposted, so reliable maps are essential. You can also download offline maps in advance for those remote areas with little, or no mobile coverage.
