Travelling in Europe with Your Dog? Here's How to Keep Them Cool and Happy

Taking your dog on a European road trip in your campervan or motorhome is an unforgettable experience. Based on our own travels, we have gathered valuable insights to help you keep your four-legged friend cool and comfortable. Our dog, Luna, has visited 23 countries with us in our campervans, so we understand the challenges and joys of travelling with a pet. In this guide, we will share our best tips to ensure your pup stays happy and safe on the road while seamlessly exploring the best of Europe with your campervan.

How Can I Keep My Dog Cool While Travelling in Europe?

1. Plan Your Travel Around Cooler Hours

Try to plan your adventures for the early morning, or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Midday heat can be extreme, especially in Southern Europe and hot pavements can be uncomfortable for your dog’s paws. If you need to drive during the day, opt for midday travel, providing your vehicle has air conditioning so you can explore during cooler hours. When driving in mainland Europe during the summer months, always aim to take frequent breaks in shaded areas where your dog can stretch, drink water and cool down.

2. Use Cooling Mats and Elevated Dog Beds

Dogs can overheat quickly inside a campervan, especially if they are resting on a hot floor. Investing in a cooling mat or an elevated dog bed can make a huge difference. Cooling mats absorb body heat and help regulate temperature, while elevated beds allow airflow underneath, preventing your dog from lying on warm surfaces. Additionally, you can soak a towel in cold water and place it near your dog to provide extra cooling. Keep these items inside your van for use while pitched up to help keep your dog comfortable.

3. Ensure Proper Ventilation and Shade

A well-ventilated campervan is crucial for keeping your dog cool. Install roof vents, use window shades and park in shaded areas whenever possible. Reflective window covers help block out the sun and reduce heat buildup inside the van. If your setup allows, consider installing a 12V fan to improve air circulation. 4. Keep Water Readily Available

Hydration is key when traveling with your dog in warm weather. Always keep a non-spill water bowl in your van so they can drink whenever needed and choose one made from a material that won’t overheat - for example, metal bowls can get too hot in the sun. Ensure their water is changed regularly to keep it fresh and consider storing bottled water in the fridge so it stays cool for them. Carry extra bottled water for long travel day. If your dog enjoys water, look for campsites near lakes, rivers, or dog-friendly beaches where they can take a refreshing dip.

5. Plan Your Stops Wisely

Not all campsites or aires offer the best conditions for dogs in the summer. Some places can be overly hot, with little shade or access to water. Research ahead of time and choose stops with natural shade, grassy areas, or nearby swimming spots. In hotter regions, look for cooler mountain locations or coastal areas with sea breezes. Keeping a flexible travel plan allows you to adapt to weather conditions and prioritise your dog's comfort.
